Record a Cleanup

Adopt-a-Street
Shelton, CT
Businesses, civic groups, and churches are encouraged to adopt a section of road by clearing litter from the right-of-way at least four times a year. In exchange for this community service, the name of the business or group will be placed on a street sign at the site, similar to the Ridgefield Adopt-a-Street sign shown at right.  The City supplies safety vests and Adopt-a-Street signs free of charge, and will cart away litter that has been collected upon notification.

How to Adopt-a-Street:
1. See our map showing streets we would like to see adopted, and streets that have already been adopted.

2. Download the Adopt-a-Street contract.  Before you get started, you will need to submit the signed contract and selected a road that is suitable for adoption.  Most residential streets do not qualify because the homeowners along the street tend to pick up the litter. City streets that are commercial, industrial, or forested are the best bet.  At this time we are not including state highways such as Bridgeport Ave, Rt 110 or Rt 108 because the State does pick them up from time to time. Mail the form to the address shown on the contract.

Starting in 2013, we are also encouraging our Adopters to record each cleanup via a brief online form (click here), including how much was picked up.  This gives us a better idea of how much litter is being collected by volunteers around the city.
